Country Open Mic Night a Monthly Event At Big Rax

So much Country Music talent in one room is sure to make for an amazing night

After Cole Taylor and Highway55 brought home a combined THREE awards at GA-Country last weekend, putting these guys together on stage with a few other friends is the natural thing to do.

There is no way you can deny that Albany and surrounding areas are just chock full of musical talent. Think about everyone who has come out of SOWEGA in the last ten years. It’s a hell of a list. We’ve obviously still got people on the way up as well, as was just confirmed last weekend at the awards. But in our opinion, there has been something missing in this town for a while…

In musical history, certain towns have risen and fallen musically during different eras. Think about Paris, Seattle, Atlanta, Austin, Detroit… in each of these cities up and coming artists hung out together and even created music together. In the 60′s in Paris, Eric Clapton was playing in a smoky dive when a totally unknown guitarist asked if he could sit in with him. That artist astounded Eric that evening. That artist was a young Jimmy Hendrix. The two were friends ever since. In the 90s in Seattle, not only did grunge bands play together, they hung out together and even more importantly took care of their friends. The first grunge band to sign with a major label was Soundgarden, followed shortly by Nirvana and then a host of others as these guys talked up their friends to the labels and got them on board as well. Albany has this kind of talent and can be a major music scene, we just need this kind of co operation.

Albany’s biggest place for country music is making it happen. Behind the scenes several of us have talked about it for months but finally all the pieces have fallen in place and things are about to start happening. Starting this Wednesday night, the major local talent is going to have an open mic night at Big Rax. Each month this will be a totally free event. No one is out to make money, the artists are not getting paid, the bar is charging no cover, but if you come in you will be wowed.

Kicking it off will be Cole Taylor, Highway55, Caylee Anna, Ben Wells, Travis Denning and Andy Miller will all be on the stage at Big Rax all night. Nothing formal, just hanging out, jamming together, writing new songs together and making the magic happen.

I think there will be some magic happen each month during this event.

Dont miss it!
