DCSS Suffers Further Embarassment

Yes, The School System Really Is This Stupid. Be Glad Your Children Don’t Go There

As I’m sure you know by now, the Dougherty County Schools are in dire straights. With the huge cheating scandal, felony charges pending against several administrators and finally losing Title 1 money it’s understandable that some employees may be ready to send out distress calls, while other employees are still looking for ways to cover their ass!

This morning it seems one of the disheartened employees may have tried to send us all a message. The American Flag was run up on the flag pole UPSIDE DOWN! The US Flag Code says this is only to be done in times of dire distress as quoted below

§176. Respect for flag

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

Terry Lewis of The Albany Herald grabbed a photo this morning of the US Flag being displayed in this manner at DCSS Offices. According to Terry, he went in and told an office of the matter. As Terry watched, employees went outside to change the Flag back to it’s proper configuration, however in the process Terry says they

lowered the flag and allowed it to drag across the ground as they turned it union side up

Seems DCSS really has no respect for the US FLAG.

Let’s keep the pressure up on this bunch of miscreants running our school system. The behavior of this body cannot be tolerated!

I think the “Be glad your children don’t go there” is a little over the top here and is a slap in the face of the parents whose children actually go to these schools. It’s funny you leave Albany for whatever reason but still feel the need to post your TMZ style articles about our city and our leaders.

Did you go inside and alert someone that it was wrong or just take a picture and leave with the intentions of throwing mud in someone’s face?

It’s not just the school system it’s the uneducated or lack of attention to detail the PEOPLE of Albany have. I stepped out of the Albany’s airport a couple years ago coming back from California and the first thing I noticed was the flag outside of the airport upside down. I WENT BACK INSIDE and asked the lady at the information desk who was responsible for putting up the flag and she pointed to one of Albany’s finest that was posted at the airport. I went to the officer and told him and he had know idea what I was talking about and ask me to show him. We walked outside together and I pointed to the upside down flag and explained ot him how it was supposed to be. He pulled it down shortly after that and ran it up properly. He either did not know it was wrong or it was an accident. He didn’t do it intentionally, but his lack of attention to detailed really showed off Albany’s ignorance to everyone who goes in and out of that airport. I’m sure some businessman from BFE is still talking about the upside down flag he saw at the airport when he came to Albany to for a business trip.

Jesse, the article clearly states that the photographer went inside and reported it

The problems the school systems face in Albany are comical at best and felonious at worst. If you have children in this system you should be beating down the doors in protest. If you dont like my page, there is a ‘unlike’ button. As a business owner and with family in Albany I have very close ties and will not be halting any coverage. Expect more scathing reports on all sorts of interesting activity in the city.

  3. August 8, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Not only is it a slap in the face to parents but to teachers as well. Yes that is terrible and disrespectful that someone didn’t pay enough attention to the flag, horrible there are cheating scandals, etc but that is not the case at every Dougherty county school as this article portrays!

  4. August 8, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Perhaps not every school in this system is ‘in distress’ but the vast majority of them are as evidenced by the report sent to the governor. Couple that with criminal indictments of the administration and the loss of Title One funding due to what seems to be mis management of funds and possible pay offs to ‘buddies’ and the entire system needs an enema. What are you doing to help other than crying about someone who has an opinion based on things that actually happened? You just want to ‘turn a blind eye’ because it’s not in the school your child goes to? What happens when your child is old enough for Albany High?

  5. August 8, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Unfortunately, the DCSS Administration Building reflects on all teachers and administrators. If more people would stop defending the school board, either out of fear or pride, they would have no other choice than to adhere to outcry of the citizens demanding accountability. I personally, don’t care if it offends the teachers, because the men and women who DIED or unselfishly fought for your freedoms have been shamed by this ignorant act. I’m offended that you teachers are not offended by this. What does THIS recent act teach our children? What message are you sending by stating that you are offended by our comments? Stand up to the DCSS, they should be ashamed!

  6. August 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Funny, we’re missing a comment that was on here just a little while ago. A teacher was offended because this article was written, and I was offended that she wasn’t offended at the act itself. Rather than take your comment off, it would have been honorable for you to explain your actions. Our soldiers deserve that much.

  7. August 8, 2012 at 2:44 pm

thats ok, the comment is preserved on the blog

  8. August 8, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I will quote it back here for posterity.

Now, lets just provide a bit more clarification. DCSS is in DANGER OF LOSING IT’S ACCREDITATION. If that happens, even the lucky children who attend Lake Park Elementary wont be able to get into college if they graduate from this cancerous school system. If you are unfortunate enough to have children in this system, it’s time to take action and reclaim your schools and your government. Someone doesnt have to ‘live there’ to point this out.

  10. August 8, 2012 at 2:55 pm

    AMEN ROB!!!!!

  11. August 8, 2012 at 3:09 pm

“The lucky children”? My child worked hard to get into that school and for you to discredit that shows the type of person you really are. You really are a piece of work Rob

To me the whole flag thing is a slap in the face my father and grandfather defended that flag and both retired from the army and to say they didn’t know it happened is a ball face lie and to defend them you are no better than they are but for us to give them the satisfactory of us ranting on it they got what they wanted attention well now that they got it I hope they get burned I feel sorry for the children who have to be punished for the ignorant so called adults that have caused this mess for these kids they are the teachers and administration is the cause for all of it stop running a buddy system and do your jobs start point the finger the other direction not at the ones who care and speak out for these children we are there voices and we will be heard and I don’t even live in doughtery county but I’m a father

  14. August 8, 2012 at 3:55 pm

How does an elementary student “work hard ” to get into a public school?

  15. August 8, 2012 at 5:40 pm

@ivy for you to even have to ask that it proves you don’t know the system at all.

  16. August 8, 2012 at 6:27 pm

What grade is your child in Eric? I will not allow this post to degenerate into degrading comments which you and your wife are the only ones here guilty of. Ivy happens to have a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education with 15 years experience teaching in the State of Georgia and is certified as ‘highly qualified’. However, you have still not answered the question. “How does an elementary student ‘work hard’ to get into a public school”? Please address these two questions before commenting any further here.

  17. August 8, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Eric, I have never had children in DCSS, but I do know how students that do not live in the attendance zone are allowed to attend Lake Park .

  18. August 8, 2012 at 7:12 pm

I normally would not acknowledge something like this, but this can’t go unsaid.
I am product of the DCSS. I have many friends and family that are as well. We aren’t low-life thugs, thieves, welfare or food stamp recipients. I have classmates who is a Dean of North Carolina University

  19. August 8, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Police officers, nurses, doctors, Military, business owners and many more professions. We aren’t any less accomplished than someone from another county or school district. I also was present to watch two family friends graduate with honors from Westover High this spring. I also know of younger students who have worked very hard to get accepted into the magnet program. These parents and students don’t deserve this “opinion based” rant because of their zip code.

  20. August 8, 2012 at 7:39 pm

This is not an ‘opinion based rant’. Everything stated in this article is factual. The DCSS is in danger of losing accreditation. Members of the administration are pending felony charges. Title One money has been pulled. There is a State investigation underway. A few of you thing ‘everything will be ok’ – you are exactly the problem with ‘whats wrong’. Any school system can wand will produce students who excel. A GOOD school system should have graduates who GENERALLY excel. DCSS produces MOSTLY below average students. This effects the economy, your home value, and your childrens future. Those of you who want to defend a school system with this ones track record cant see the forest for the trees.

  21. August 8, 2012 at 7:43 pm

“Be glad your children don’t go there”- your words not mine- YOUR OPINION!

  22. August 8, 2012 at 7:46 pm

And I’m not defending any wrong doing of the DCSS because I do not have direct knowledge of those accusations. You, however, seemed to know everything about everyone. I’m not sure how Albany made it without you before now….

If all of you getting mad would pay attention we are not talking about the students we are talking about the system pay attention your children are suffering because of the wrong doings of some of the teachers and the school board so instead of going after us go after them pay attention to the system I personally don’t care if you like this or not cause its the truth

  24. August 8, 2012 at 7:51 pm

There are many people, including myself who went to DCSS. Let’s face it, the school system is in trouble and has been for at least the last 10 years. The system has many schools on the needs improvement list and has not made AYP since the No Child Left Behind legislation was started.

  25. August 8, 2012 at 9:41 pm

You are a horrible human being. Do you know anything about what you are writing. Waste.

  26. August 8, 2012 at 9:42 pm

The man who puts up the flag messed up today… What is your excuse? You are a disgrace.

  27. August 8, 2012 at 10:44 pm

A child may indeed work hard to go to Lake Park or any other public magnet school. Lake Park and others have magnet programs. One may live anywhere in Dougherty County and attend Lake Park if he or she passes the magnet entrance exam.

  28. August 9, 2012 at 4:08 am

Albany schools have been shit for quite a long time. Learn to play basketball or football. Anything else is a dead end.

  29. August 9, 2012 at 12:58 pm

A Presidential proclamation has been issued to fly the flag at half staff until sunset on August 10, 2012 in honor of the victims of the Oak Creek, WI shootings.
