Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillips

Phillip Phillips has hit the local the music scene like a rocket!

Blending his own soulful style with some of the other great musicians here in Albany, GA is how you will normally find him on stage. Whether accompanied by R&B group G&S, his silk throated sister, or a great sax player, you will always find a new show each time you see this local artist.

Never one to rest on his laurels and deliver the same set list night after night, Phillip Phillips is always innovating and working on his own compositions which are undoubtedly influenced by the sound of Dave Matthews.

Phillip took some time to talk with us one on one about how he got his start, what he’s doing now and what his is goal for his music in the future.

Early Start

Phillip started playing when he was 14 years old. He credits his brother-in-law, Ben Neil for peaking his interest to pursue music. To quote Phillip, “Ben’s an amazing guitarist, musician/producer and a best friend as well.” Each time Phillip Phillips visited his brother-in-law (Ben), he taught him a couple of chords and the rest as they say is history.

Music Runs in the Family

As we talked with Phillip, we learned the entire family is musically talented! His mom plays the piano, dad and BOTH sisters sing, I guess that makes for awesome family gatherings!

While Phillip plays mainly focuses on the guitar, he can hold his own on the bass, piano and computerized drums.

Musical Influences

The musician he admires most is Dave Matthews. When Phillip is enjoying his personal “chill time”, he enjoys artists like; Tool, Mumford & Sons and Jonny Lang, just to name a few.

Performing

The demand for Phillip Phillips (Band) continues to increase. Recently, they have collaborated with the G&S Experience, a combination that fans absolutely LOVE!  During the month of October, they are already booked for every weekend. His high number of songs of his playlist allows him to tailor a set list to whatever type event he is performing at

When asked how he handles mistakes in his show, he simply said, “I laugh, joke on myself and carry on.”  Believe or not, he still gets nervous when he performs (trust me it definitely doesn’t show) but that all disappears after the first note.

He offers this advice to the up and comers; “Just have fun and do yo thing!” He remembers to ALWAYS put the music first!! He pushes himself hard, but not as hard as he thinks he should (spoken like a true musician).  He and Ben push each other to always try to be better and grow stronger in music.

Volunteer Work

He volunteers often with Mission:Change ( www.missionchange.com), a local non-profit that works to eradicate hunger and homeless.
